Just when you thought it was safe to go diamond shopping… Tales of engagement and non-engagement…

I’ve dealt with thousands of different people over the years and that would mean thousands of different personalities but as trends go, some repeat themselves as you’ll see in what follows.

We all know the following couple but have dealt with them in different circumstances, mine happen to be when they are shopping for engagement rings. The woman is overbearing, tending towards obnoxious, the man is overwhelmed, unable to finish his own sentences somewhat emasculated.

Here’s how it usually starts: Woman struts into store pronounces “I want to see everything!”, man follows shoulders slumped feet shuffling resigned, at this point I put on the charm steer the couple to a cozy corner where I state clearly that I don’t do everything but would be more then happy to work with this fine couple if they show a little focus.

The battle lines are drawn…

If I haven’t told you before I’m Irish and a little head strong myself so I may feel a slight need to defend what I feel is, this fellows lack of manhood so I whip out my imaginary sword and I’m ready to do battle with Madame Overbearing.

Me: Is there a particular style of diamond engagement ring you’re after?

M.O.: (I’ll abbreviate Madame Overbearing from this point on) Perhaps you misunderstood me but I did state that I want to see everything!!!

Me: I’ll repeat it more slowly this time I…Don’t…Do…Everything…I…Need…Focus…I’m sure you understand sir.

Overwhelmed man starts to speak but is drowned out by M O “perhaps you didn’t understand me but in the interest in this process started, show me that ring over there!!”

Me: As I think to myself that this is going nowhere I pull a gorgeous cushion cut Diamond engagement ring from the window and proceed to show it to M O. “ well this is beautiful why don’t you try it on”

M.O.: “well you mustn’t be the sharpest tack in the box, I Meant the Other Ring over there!!!”

Me: At this point I think, why did I start with this shrew, grab the other ring and shove it on M O’s finger

M.O.: What do you think of this one Stanley? Stanley starts to speak but is quickly drowned out, frankly it’s not all that important what he thinks as all he’s doing is paying for it!”

Me: ” Well at this point I’ve had enough time to defend all manhood, I start to put all the jewelry away while the couple across from me looks slightly bewildered, once everything has been cleared from the counter, I state clearly while pointing my fingers,” ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO MARRY HER!!!”

Here’s where it gets interesting, the couple is usually slightly stunned, taken aback etc. M O usually starts sputtering and twitching while overwhelmed man stands just a bit straighter. I proceed to open the door and shoo the couple away.

Well not all my encounters end with a sale some just end with a lesson in life. Let’s face it when I’m dealing with you, the general public, we are in to happy endings and 99% of the time, that’s what’s accomplished the other 1% is just plain interesting.

Fancy is great but sometimes simple can be better…


You may ask yourself just what I mean by that, well I’ll tell you. In the above picture you see two fancy yellow diamonds surrounded by small round brilliant-cut diamond set micro-pave’ style, let’s face it these are gorgeous fancy diamonds earrings. I made them and in my opinion these are occasion pieces, meant to be worn on special occasions: weddings, black tie affairs, red carpets etc.

Well, as I said in my opening statement sometimes simple is better and what can be simpler then a pair of Diamond Studs. Diamond studs are probably the best gift a man can give to a woman other than children and an engagement ring. They can be dressed up or dressed down; they can be worn for all occasions or none at all. They are simple diamond beauty in a non complicated setting. Diamond studs are all about the diamond, no fuss no muss.

They are a great gift; guys as I’ve said before diamond studs are a no brainer, if you’re not ready to pop the question then they’ll buy you time (keep the wolves from the door as they say).You’ll also find that no matter how many pairs of earrings your girlfriend/wife has, they will wear the diamond studs at least 90% of the time. They also make great holiday, birthday and anniversary gifts. I can assure you that this is one gift that you won’t have to worry over; they’ll love them and love you for giving them.

Girls what can be better than something that goes with everything, how many things in your wardrobe can you say do that. Four life changing words usually result in exhilarating response. Well this is an easy how to on how to arrive at those four words.

1. Find someone special, now that you’ve accomplished that we will go to step 2.

2. Okay you are ready to get engaged, you get a feel for what she likes and in doing so you’ll also get a feel for what it will cost you.

3. Now create an ultimate budget that includes the cost of the setting and the diamond, I recommend you’ll leave yourself some wiggle room up and down.


4. Find a jeweler that you are comfortable with, you can do these two ways: 1) Get recommendations from family and friends. 2) Trial and error; go out drop in on a few stores, trust your judgment your instincts are correct, work with whom you are most comfortable.

5. Proceed to pick the diamond and engagement ring.

6. Pick a nice place to propose, someplace special; you’ll always remember it that way (foot note: for those that are doing it more then once I recommend that you try something fresh!).

Cheap can be expensive…

A wise man once conveyed to me the quote,” cheap can be expensive”; while this is true in most aspects in life, here we are in the jewelry subject so I’ll concentrate on that.

Let’s face it you’ll spend months looking for the perfect diamond, you’ll find it and because sometimes you are in a hurry or perhaps you just want the whole process over, so you pick a setting right out of the showcase or on the internet. Wrong, you should put just as much work (and sometimes more) into the ring that you will present your loved one. Don’t get me wrong if it’s a solitaire you are after that doesn’t take a great amount of thought as there are not a huge amount of options and the simple beauty of a diamond solitaire is sometimes a no-brainer.


What I’m really driving at is if you afford yourself enough time and have budgeted yourself enough money, a custom made mounting is truly worth it. Here at Shenoa Diamonds we do this daily for our customers and the results are outstanding. The pictures we have presented to you over the last few months are examples of our handmade work. I’m not talking a huge wait time either, as I’ve discussed before with you these projects typically takes about two weeks to complete and is well worth the small wait. It doesn’t take much…

You know life is easy when one realizes it doesn’t take much to make someone happy (and that includes yourself). The family is down by me for vacation, you know fun in the sun at the Jersey Shore. Well, as I have shared with you before my kids love their aunts and uncles and always have a blast when they are around them. Really have to thank Uncle Keith and Aunt Anita for those golf clubs they gave them, they are beating each other with them as I write this…Cool!!!

What I’m trying to relate is it doesn’t take much to make special people in your life happy. Sometimes it’s just a simple question like; “Will You Marry Me?” I recommend asking this one with a diamond engagement ring in close proximity.

How about “Happy Birthday Honey” preferably spoken with a gift of diamond stud earrings in your pocket especially when it is an important number i.e. 25, 30, 40 etc., you get the point.

“For our 10th I have something special planned” really recommend someplace special, a great restaurant, perhaps a getaway weekend and with this I recommend a diamond eternity band to top it off.

These are all easy ways to keep that special someone happy, they just take a little time and money, when spent is well invested because as far as I’m concerned there is no better investment then each other.

Though I most times advise my customers not to put the cart before the horse, I do find that a percentage is concerned about the wedding band when making the engagement ring purchase. Here at Shenoa Diamonds let’s put those fears to rest once and for all.

Repeat after me: “there is a match to every engagement ring” got it, say it one more time, now take a deep breath and relax that worries over. As you can see from the picture accompanying this note the ring has met its match, while this is on the simple classic side we have here at Shenoa rings that work with all diamond engagement rings. Keep in mind is that I am (as well as the rest of our staff) prepared to also custom make a wedding band just for you, with the stable of artisans we have on hand it takes about 10 days to create a custom fit band and it’s a fairly simple process.

Here’s how it works, first we recommend that you pick out your bands at least 3 months before the wedding date, if possible (we work quicker for weddings that start with a shot gun), stop in and we will craft a band that works with your engagement ring, sometimes this means leaving your engagement ring for a couple of days so the match is perfect, Next step is you may wish to see a wax model before the ring is finished (this is highly recommended for an intricate project), once the wax is approved the matching ring is completed (time frame 10 days mostly) and finally you come in and pick up your custom made ring.
